Swami discusses the famous statement of Rupa Goswami in which he says that the desires for bhukti and mukti are like witches in the heart and as long as such desires are present, pure devotional service does not manifest. Bhukti, which exists on the karmic plane, is compared to a graveyard; mukti, because it erases individuality and makes devotional service impossible, is compared to hell. These desires are present in the hearts of the four types of pious people described in Bhagavad-gita 7.16; when Krsna by his mercy removes these desires, the pious become eligible for devotional service. This lecture includes the narration of Rupa Goswami's chastisement of Jiva Goswami and the example of Jiva Goswami's extraordinary humility as a model disciple.
